Innovation through new blood

Abstract: We model the influence of employee mobility on the transmission of knowledge between firms, assuming human capital to be an important influence on service innovation and firm productivity. To this end, we follow individual workers as they move from firm to firm, controlling for knowledge characteristics ('absorptive capacity') of the firm and for regional effects (agglomeration and urbanization). We measure the amount and variety of such flows, and we find statistically significant results; yet the impact of n… Show more

“…On the other hand, new digital infrastructure aids in promoting technological innovation (Tang et al, 2021). Firstly, it can weaken the boundaries of time and space (Bottazzi and Peri, 2003;Nelson et al, 2017;Ferreira et al, 2019), greatly enhancing the efficiency of information, technology, and knowledge dissemination (Damsa et al, 2021;Rodon and Eaton, 2021), and reducing the friction in the flow of innovation factors (Smit, 2017). This strengthens regional technological spillover effects, facilitating the sharing of knowledge and technology, and enabling innovators to access cutting-edge knowledge and technology, thereby improving the level of technological innovation.…”

“…The spillover effects are reflected in the following aspects: first, transportation infrastructure construction achieves regional accessibility and actively promotes the free flow of innovation factors between regions and extensive development of innovation activities on the premise of effectively reducing transport transaction costs [4]. Secondly, transportation infrastructure construction strengthens regional economic correlation and expands regional boundaries, which is conducive to accelerating the free flow of inter-regional competitive inputs such as resource factors and promoting the division of labor and agglomeration of industries, thus forming innovation [35]. Third, transportation infrastructure construction promotes the diffusion and exchange of shared input factors between regions, and strengthens the innovative learning effect on the basis of knowledge spillover [36].…”
