Innovative Analysis of Service-Learning Effects in Physical Education: A Mixed-Methods Approach

Abstract: Purpose: To compare the development of teaching competency in preservice teachers of physical education (n = 96) through two different modalities of intervention from the same service-learning program. The preservice teachers provided a direct service to children with motor functional diversity, promoting their motor skills and counteracting their lack of social attention. Method: The topic was approached using mixed methods with methodological triangulation. Quantitative evidence was gathered through a quasi-… Show more

“…Studies analyzing the results from PETE students used all three types of methodology. Five studies used experimental and control groups: Chiva-Bartoll et al [ 40 ], Chiva-Bartoll et al [ 29 ], and Capella et al [ 38 ] used a mixed methods approach, while Chiva-Bartoll et al [ 42 ] and Willard and Crandall [ 58 ] used quantitative methods.…”

“…In this sense, on the threshold of the third millennium, Eyler and Giles [14] already pointed out that SL was a valid option to satisfy these approaches. Particularly, the competence-based approach to train Physical Education Teacher Education students (PETEs) encourages the implementation of SL, allowing students to apply learning in real conditions [15][16][17].…”

“…Within a mixed-method approach, this pre-experimental study relied upon a quantitative and qualitative research perspective with methodological triangulation [ 43 ]. Through purposive sampling, 53 students in their fourth year at secondary school ( M age = 15.50, SD age = 0.57; n = 16 female), and from two different school groups attending one north-eastern Spanish public secondary school, were taught through a hybrid TGfU/SE volleyball teaching unit.…”

“…Finally, TGfU/SE studies conducted so far have been carried out from a quantitative or qualitative approach, which, in some cases, limits the understanding of the findings. From a critical point of view, and with the aim of adding to past TGfU/SE evidence, the research studies conducted should rely on a mixed-method approach to obtain more in-depth insights into students’ motivational processes, beyond those that can be gathered through quantitative or qualitative data alone [ 43 ].…”
