Innovative Approach for Enhancing Testing of HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C in the General Population: Protocol for an Acceptability and Feasibility Study (BaroTest 2016)

Abstract: BackgroundDespite substantial screening for HIV, hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections in France, a great number of infected persons remain undiagnosed. In this context, Santé publique France experimented with a new screening approach for HBV, HCV, and HIV infection, based on home self-sampling using dried blood spot (DBS) for blood collection.ObjectiveThe objectives of the BaroTest study were to assess the acceptability and feasibility of this approach and to update the prevalence es… Show more

“…Some labs provide infectious disease testing services which can examine 4th generation HIV antibody testing using dried blood spot and chlamydia and gonorrhea testing using mail-in swabs, as well as mail-in samples for Hepatitis B and C testing [31][32][33]. Alcohol use can be remotely monitored using Bluetooth-enabled breathalyzers that estimate breath alcohol concentration or wrist-worn alcohol biosensors that continuously measure transdermal alcohol content [34][35][36].…”

“…To our knowledge, BaroTest is the first survey on HCV, HBV and HIV screening based on home-based blood self-sampling among the general population. A comprehensive system of reminders was put in place to prompt those who had agreed to participate to carry out the home-sampling (Figure 1 supplementary material) (22). Of all those initially invited to participate in the survey, almost 40% returned DBS, demonstrating that home-based blood self-sampling may constitute an effective and inexpensive tool in epidemiological studies.…”

“…BaroTest used home-based blood self-sampling on dried blood spots (DBS). From these DBS, detection of HCV antibodies and HCV RNA (in case of anti-HCVpositive samples) was performed [24,25].…”
