Innovative nanotheranostics: Smart nanoparticles based approach to overcome breast cancer stem cells mediated chemo‐ and radioresistances

Abstract: The alarming increase in the number of breast cancer patients worldwide and the increasing death rate indicate that the traditional and current medicines are insufficient to fight against it. The onset of chemo-and radioresistances and cancer stem cell-based recurrence make this problem harder, and this hour needs a novel treatment approach. Competent nanoparticle-based accurate drug delivery and cancer nanotheranostics like photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, chemodynamic therapy, and sonodynamic ther… Show more

“…The combined activity of DiD with PDT laser resulted in the efficient production of ROS and further promoted inhibition of tumor growth. An interesting review by Kola et al [ 276 ] presents the combination of chemotherapy with PTT, PDT, and SDT in theranostic nanomedicine applications for effective treatment of breast cancer. This outlines the mechanisms of action and the therapeutic efforts to overcome breast cancer stem cells.…”

“…Regarding the fact that therapy resistance and associated subsequent near or distant relapses are common in patients with HNCs [107], the application of smart NPs can especially offer a promising approach to overcome resistance. For breast cancer, several studies have already described novel nanotheranostic systems, which can prevent tumor recurrences [108]. These smart NPs in combination with chemo-and/or immunotherapy have the potential not only to kill tumor cells but can also help to overcome radio-and chemoresistance mediated by cancer stem cells.…”

“…This is particularly relevant for HSCs, which are highly dependent on maintaining genome stability for survival. One recent advancement that may enable tumour selectivity is nanoparticle technology [ 254 ]. These novel platforms involve encapsulating drugs in polymer-lipid hybrid nanoparticles, which recognise antigens associated with CSCs, such as CD44, ALDH1, and CD133, and have been shown to target BCSCs and colorectal CSCs [ 255 , 256 ].…”
