Innovativeness and Cognitive Complexity: A Second Look

Abstract: Innovativeness and cognitive complexity are hypothesized to be positively related. Since both constructs seem to be multi-dimensional, the methodological validity of the relationship is an especially important issue. Two studies were conducted using different measures of each construct. In the first, 82 undergraduates completed the Innovativeness Scale, the Open Processing Scale, and the Rep Test. The correlation between the two innovativeness scales was high, but the two with the cognitive complexity measure … Show more

“…The scale is computed as the sum of the items, with the scores ranging from 10–50. In prior work, the scale’s test-retest reliability and internal consistency have been adequate (Cronbach 0.83) (Payne & Beatty, 1982), it has a coherent internal structure, and construct validity (Goldsmith & Nugent, 1984) has been demonstrated in its correlation to conceptually similar constructs such as consumer innovativeness and domain specific innovativeness (Goldsmith & Hofacker, 1991; Manning, Bearden, & Madden, 1995). Bridging potential was also assessed based on a newly created 7-item scale developed by the first and last author that assessed respondents’ self-description of their network position (see Appendix for all scales).…”

“…The studies by Goldsmith and Nugent (1984) and Rude-Parkins, Baugh and Petrosko (1993), in which relationships between personal characteristics and innovativeness were not established, provided suggestions for improved additional studies. This suggested the need for additional research in this area.…”

“…The last two studies in this section treated innovativeness as a variable that could be used to predict computer use. Goldsmith and Nugent (1984), hypothesized that cognitive complexity and innovativeness were positively correlated. Cognitive complexity referred "to the number and sophistication of cognitive structures used by the individual in evaluation and judgment" (p. 432).…”
