Inorganic composition and filler particles morphology of conventional and self‐adhesive resin cements by SEM/EDX

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to characterize the inorganic components and morphology of filler particles of conventional and self-adhesive, dual-curing, resin luting cements. The main components were identified by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy microanalysis (EDX), and filler particles were morphologically analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Four resin cements were used in this study: two conventional resin cements (RelyX ARC/3M ESPE and Clearfil Esthetic Cement/Kuraray Medical) and two self… Show more

“…According to Mulltinovic‐Nikolic, Medi, and Vukovic () and Aguiar, Francescantonio, Bedran‐Russo and Marcelo (), self‐adhesive resin cements as RU incorporate in its composition acid and zinc oxide powders, or aluminum silicate glass, as well as phosphoric acid. The powder of glass ionomer cements has particles in the micrometer range, while the resin cements have nanometric particles.…”

“…Specimens were identified by using a SEM operating with a Vantage System (Noran Instruments, Middleton, WI). The spectra for EDX measurements were obtained for 100 s livetime (voltage: 15 kV; dead time 20–25%; working distance: 20 mm) [11]. …”

“…Images of the filler particles in each alginate material were obtained at 1200x magnification (voltage: 15 kV; beam width: 25–30 nm; working distance: 10–15 mm) [11]. The SEM images were imported and analyzed using an image-analysis system (ImageJ 1.41; Wayne Rasband, National of Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA).…”
