“…Traditional repellents such as oil of citronella and various formulations of pyrethrum were tested but found to be inadequate 42. Much work and progress in the identification and evaluation of efficacious compounds and mixtures were reported by Granett and Haynes at Rutgers University,49 the Naval Medical Research Institute, Bethesda, MD, and largely the Orlando, FL, USDA Laboratory, Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine, FL, from 1942 to 1947,50 which was supported by the USDA Office of Scientific Research and Development and the US Army 51. The large‐scale screening effort evaluated approximately 6000 chemicals37, 50–52 against several dipteran species (the yellow‐fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti L., a malaria mosquito, Anopheles quadrimaculatus Say, and the stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans L.) and found only a small percentage to equal that of existing standards.…”
