Insecticide space spraying for preventing malaria transmission

Abstract: Background Space spraying is the dispersal of a liquid fog of insecticide into an outdoor area to kill adult insects. It has been regularly used in public health and pest control programmes, including use as an emergency response to malaria epidemics. This Cochrane Review aims to assist the decision‐making of malaria vector control programmes by summarizing the evidence of the impact of space spraying on malaria transmission. Objectives The review's primary objective wa… Show more

“…The insecticide may be delivered using hand-held, vehicle-mounted, or aircraft-mounted equipment [ 29 ]. The impact of fogging as a malaria vector control intervention for reducing adult Anopheles mosquitoes fluctuates between 50∼100% [ 30 ], and we evaluated the impact of thermal fogging for a moderate range of efficacy, where the mitigation efficacy varied from 0.2∼0.6.…”

“…In our study, spacespraying is possibly targeting outdoor resting mosquitoes, such as A. albimanus, especially in peri-urban areas where housing conditions are poor and outdoor exposure is higher. There is evidence of a positive effect of space-spraying on malaria incidence in India, but the current evidence base is limited (Pryce et al, 2018).…”

“…It is a crucial method for controlling Aedes mosquitoes and mitigating arboviral diseases [ 36 ], especially during dengue fever epidemics. Space spraying aims to incapacitate and kill adult insects by spreading a mist of insecticide droplets in an area [ 37 ].…”
