Insights from specimen data for two economicChrysobothrisspecies (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) in the western United States

Abstract: Chrysobothris mali Horn and Chrysobothris femorata (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) are wood-boring beetles native to western North America. Both species are highly polyphagous, feeding on a wide range of deciduous trees and shrubs, including fruit and nut trees as well as shade trees grown as nursery stock. Chrysobothris femorata is widely distributed across North America, while C. mali occurs west of the Rocky Mountains. There is a notable lack of basic biological information regarding both species’ pheno… Show more

“…Note on taxonomy: Recent research has established that Chrysobothris femorata co‐occurs with a suite of cryptic species; this is a complex of 12 closely related species, and adult beetles within the group are often morphologically indistinguishable. Because of this, the number of Chrysobothris species within the group is continuously being amended (Williamson, 2022 ; Rudolph & Wiman, 2023 ) Chrysobothris mali …”

“…Consequently, researchers must visit, hand sort, examine, transcribe the associated metadata, and then analyze it. As an example of the continuing value of this procedure, analyses of host records from specimen label data revealed nonoverlapping host use, which provided insights into management strategies (Rudolph and Wiman 2023).…”
