Insights into Marker Assisted Selection and Its Applications in Plant Breeding

Abstract: Burgeoning the human population with its required food demand created a burden on ever-decreasing cultivated land and our food production systems. This situation prompted plant scientists to breed crops in a short duration with specific traits. Marker-assisted selection (MAS) has emerged as a potential tool to achieve desirable results in plants with the help of molecular markers and improves the traits of interest in a short duration. The MAS has comprehensively been used in plant breeding to characterize ger… Show more

“…These accessions to FOM are controlled by a single dominant gene (Boyaci & Abak 2008). Identification of DNA markers that are tightly linked to a resistance gene is a powerful and useful tool to avoid the previously mentioned drawbacks in breeding programmes such as timeconsuming process and reliability (Osei et al 2018;Kumawat et al 2020).…”

“…The morphological (trait-specific), proteinaceous (isoenzyme), cytological (chromosome-specific), and DNA markers have been used in plant breeding. DNA markers have been extensively utilized for marker-assisted selection of crop plants ( Madina et al, 2013 ; Kumawat et al, 2020 ). Recently, the advanced molecular breeding tools such as SSRs, Indels, SNPs, genome sequencing, genotype by sequencing, and microRNAs have been used for crop improvement ( Devarumath et al, 2014 ; Platten et al, 2019 ; Bohar et al, 2020 ) to confer biotic and abiotic stress tolerance ( Shriram et al, 2016 ; Devarumath et al, 2019 ).…”

“…2019). Of the vitamin E family, α-tocotrienol (range 56.4 mg/kg) is the most abundant in oat, accounting for >40% of tocotrienols (Lásztity et al . 1980), and α-tocopherol (range 14.9 mg/kg) accounts for 18% of tocopherols (Polonskiy et al .…”

“…Traditional plant breeding approaches such as germplasm screening, selection (pure line, mass and pedigree methods), polyploidisation, hybridisation (inter-and intra-specific) and mutagenesis have been used extensively to improve yield, quality traits and resilience to biotic and abiotic stresses (Boczkowska et al 2015;Roy et al 2020;Chand et al 2022). However, integration of conventional breeding methods with new biotechnological tools such as molecular breeding, omics, genome editing and genetic engineering could address prevailing challenges, because biotechnological approaches are more reliable, efficient, successful and reproducible (Kumawat et al 2020;Kumar et al 2021). Such integration will increase our understanding of the genetic basis of quantitative traits and eventually increase our abilities to modify complex traits, including yield and nutritional quality.…”
