Insights into the Ecological Diversification of the Hymenochaetales based on Comparative Genomics and Phylogenomics With an Emphasis onColtricia

Abstract: To elucidate the genomic traits of ecological diversification in the Hymenochaetales, we sequenced 15 new genomes, with attention to ectomycorrhizal (EcM) Coltricia species. Together with published data, 32 genomes, including 31 Hymenochaetales and one outgroup, were comparatively analyzed in total. Compared with those of parasitic and saprophytic members, ectomycorrhizal species have significantly reduced number of plant cell wall degrading enzyme (PCWDE) genes, and expanded transposable elements (TEs), genom… Show more

“… Fungi represent one of the most diverse groups of organisms on earth, with an indispensable role in the processes and functioning of ecosystems ( Wu et al 2020 , 2021 ; Wang et al 2021 ; Hyde 2022 ; Guan and Zhao 2023 ). Wood-inhabiting fungi play an important role in the carbon cycle ( Dai et al 2015 ; Wu et al 2017 ; Chen and Zhao 2020 ; Guan et al 2021 ; Liu et al 2022a , b ; Luo and Zhao 2022 ; Mardones et al 2023 ; Yuan et al 2023 ; Zhang et al 2023 ; Zhao et al 2023a , b ; Zhou et al 2023 ). “…The genus Coltricia Gray (1821: 644) is located in the family Hymenochaetaceae (Hymenochaetales, Basidiomycota), typified by Coltricia perennis (L.) Murrill (1903: 91) [9]. Based on the Index Fungorum (www.indexfungorum.org; accessed on 27 December 2023), the genus Coltricia has 129 specific and registered names, and currently 73 species have been accepted worldwide [10,11]. The genus Coltriciella Murrill (1904: 348) also belongs to the family Hymenochaetaceae (Hymenochaetales, Basidiomycota), typified by C. dependens (Berk.…”
