Institutional and Individual Learning Curves for Focused Abdominal Ultrasound for Trauma

Abstract: Trauma surgeons who are newly trained in the use of FAST can achieve an overall accuracy rate of at least 90% from the outset of clinical experience with this modality. Interexaminer variations in accuracy rates, which are observed above this level of performance, are probably related more to issues surrounding patient selection and inherent limitations of the examination in certain populations than to practitioner errors in the performance or interpretation of the study.

“…No traumatismo abdominal verificou-se, nesta amostragem, grande predominância do sexo masculino (82,4%), à semelhança dos resultados encontrados na literatura (Riveros et al, 2003). O mesmo ocorreu com a distribuição etária dos acidentados (Cuff et al, 2000;Ribas Filho et al, 2002); outros autores apontam a quarta década como a mais frequente (McCarter et al, 2000;Kemmeter et al, 2001).…”

“…Training level 1 is the lowest; in this study the trained in general abdominal ultrasound were radiologists at least at EFSUMB level 2 with more than two years of experience. The learning curve for FAST has been determined in several studies and the recommended number of supervised examinations has varied between ten and one hundred (14)(15)(16)(17). To our knowledge there is no European training requirements for the FAST procedure.…”

“…CUSUM analysis was obtained for each intrapulmonary artery Doppler parameter according to elsewhere-published standard methodology [12,13,14,15,16,23,24,25] and using Excel for Windows 2010 (Microsoft Corp., Redmond, Wash., USA) statistical software. In brief, the CUSUM values are plotted on the y-axis and the number of examinations on the x-axis.…”
