Institutional and relational determinants in high- and medium-extent food product crises: the inner perspective of a public health crisis

Abstract: In 2008, Canada enacted its biggest-ever food recall in response to a Listeria crisis, stemming from a Maple Leaf Foods plant, that killed 22 Canadians. Afterwards, Maple Leaf's market share quickly returned to pre-crisis levels, but the long-term repercussions of the scare still reverberate in Maple Leaf's brand. In this case study, which offers an organizational perspective on the food recall, data was collected, through in-depth interviews of persons involved in the crisis response, and analyzed. “…But this study also suggests that not every firm can partake in a live case study delivered in such a manner. Firms need to be committed to the process and accept the fact that students will have ideals which may be in conflict with the firm’s strategy (Charlebois & Horan, 2010). As this can be easily understood by most firms, the right, respectful approach towards students is critical in mitigating concerns coming from the class.…”

“…China is most certainly one region which faces greater water challenges compared to countries in the northern hemisphere (Jiang, Liping, & Sharma, 2013). As a perceived impure public good, conserved water can be subject to free-riding behaviour by citizens, countries and corporations (Charlebois & MacKay, 2010; Hansen, 2009). As demand for water usage increases, climatic factors threaten the water supply throughout the world.…”

“…The roles of media, biotechnology, and trust for effective risk communications have been well researched (Cope et al, 2010;McCluskey & Swinnen, 2011;Powell, 2000;Wentholt, Rowe, Konig, Marvin, & Frewer, 2009), and the trepidation of impending food crises encourage risk communication systems to be essentially institutionalized and must be upheld by all actors in the regulatory sector. Even with a detailed plan to yield overall effective crisis responses, some institutionalized risk communications systems falter, as in the case of Maple Leaf Foods processed meats recall in Canada (Charlebois & Horan, 2010).…”

“…Risk communication means dialogue and public engagement resulting in collective learning and increased trust in stakeholders of government processes (Charlebois and Horan, 2010;Young & Liston, 2010). The information communicated must acknowledge the needs of the public, and must not be too scientific and technical, as these messages may be too complex for some people.…”
