Studien denne artikkelen bygger på, undersøker veiledningspraksis blant instruktører for politistudenter på Politihøgskolens øvingssenter. Instruktørenes oppgave er å tilrettelegge for laering samtidig som de er faglige rollemodeller; laeringssituasjonene dreier seg om øvelser og arbeid med caser som studentene gjennomfører under veiledning. Datagrunnlaget bygger på observasjon av instruktører og studenter samt analyse av instruktørenes undervisningsplaner og refleksjonstekster. Teorier om mesterlaere og modellaering danner grunnlag for analysen. Funnene viser at instruktørene opplever det vanskelig å håndtere rollene som både politi og pedagog. Artikkelen belyser to spenningsforhold: Det ene dreier seg om forholdet mellom pedagogikk og politifaglig mestring -instruktørene ønsker å stimulere studentenes refleksjon samtidig som de vil at studentene skal mestre praktiske ferdigheter. Det andre spenningsforholdet dreier seg om at instruktørene både er praksisfeltets representanter og Politihøgskolens forlengede arm. Dette innebaerer at de må håndtere utdanningsinstitusjonens planer og retningslinjer samtidig som de må forholde seg til den faktiske politihverdagen, og disse kan stå i motstrid. Artikkelen belyser dessuten implikasjoner for politiutdanning og for profesjonsutdanning mer generelt. This article is based on a study of instructors' supervision of police students. The instructors' task is to facilitate learning simultaneously with being professional role models; the learning situations are exercises and cases that the students carry out under supervision. The data consists of observation of instructors as well as the instructors' plans and 'reflection notes' . The analysis is based on theories of apprenticeship and modelling. The findings show that the instructors find it difficult to handle the roles of both police officer and pedagogue. The article elucidates two areas of tension: The first revolves around the relationship between pedagogics and mastery of policemanship. The instructors want to stimulate reflection and mastery by the students of practical skills. The second revolves around the instructors being both representatives of the practice field and the extended arm of the Police University College.
