“…Several studies have for a number of different taxa found that genetic diversity was lower on islands compared to the mainland (Băncilă & Arntzen, ; Frankham, ; Mcglaughlin et al, ; Wang et al, ), and that it can be related to some of the predictions of the equilibrium model of island biogeography (Francisco, Santiago, Mizusawa, Oldroyd, & Arias, ; García‐Verdugo et al, ; Hurston et al, ; Mcglaughlin et al, ; Sato et al, ; Wang et al, ; Yamada & Maki, ). Furthermore, a significant relationship between genetic diversity and island area (Frankham, ; Hill, Loxterman, & Aho, ; Sato et al, ; Wang et al, ), and between genetic diversity and distance to the mainland (Francisco et al, ; García‐Verdugo et al, ; Yamada & Maki, ) has also been found. While several studies have examined the relationship between island area, distance to the mainland and genetic diversity, to our knowledge only Hill et al () and Mcglaughlin et al () explicitly tested for the equilibrium model of island biogeography.…”
