Insulin pump therapy in children and adolescents: improvements in key parameters of diabetes management including quality of life

Abstract: Pump therapy is proving an effective means of insulin therapy in the young patient that shows promise to improve glycaemic control with a reduction in hypoglycaemia frequency. Quality of Life measures suggest that psychosocial outcomes may be improved.

“…Pump therapy was introduced at our centre in 1999. We have previously reported on the first 100 patients who commenced pump therapy at our institution [3]. Over the 2 year follow-up presented in that study, patients on pump therapy had a reduction in HbA 1c of 0.5% (5.5 mmol/mol) and a 65% reduction in episodes of severe hypoglycaemia.…”
