Integrated Policy Solutions for Water Scarcity in Agricultural Communities of the American Southwest

Abstract: The conventional approach of policy interventions in water management that focus on the portions of the system that directly relate to water often lead to unintended consequences that potentially exacerbate water scarcity issues and present challenges to the future viability of many rural agricultural communities. This paper deploys a system dynamics model to illustrate how expanding the policy space of hydrology models to include socioeconomic feedbacks could address these challenges. In this regard, policies… Show more

“…To enhance water resource use efficiency, some advanced irrigation technologies such as drip and micro-irrigation have been advocated for [21]. Subsidies and technical support approaches have been supplied by the governments of India, Australia, and China [22,23]. Large-scale farming, mechanized production, and advanced agricultural resource management practices have been encouraged by various policies; these include agricultural machinery subsidies and large-scale planting subsidies, which reduce agricultural labor costs [24].…”

“…Besides the energy challenges, water scarcity and shortages have become a global problem and are expected to increase with time [6,7]. Significant efforts are focusing on the development of new and novel technologies that offer a sustainable solution for the energy and water problems [8,9]. Seawater desalination is considered one of the promising solutions to provide clean water [10,11].…”
