Integrated Quality and Sustainability Assessment in Construction: A Conceptual Model

Abstract: In today’s world, the definition of quality has been extended to more comprehensive level, which also comprises sustainable performance. The paper systematically builds an integrated model that includes quality as well as sustainable performance of the built environment and accompanying construction processes. This model for the “Integrated Quality and Sustainability Performance Assessment in Construction” presents a three-level arrangement, namely: the structure, process/ project, and construction product. We… Show more

“…There is still room for subsequent researchers to consider the significance of other dimensions in building up the holistic view of corporate sustainability. Among potential candidates, quality dimensions receive considerably greater attention from academic researchers as another aspect contributing to corporate sustainability (Curkovic et al 2000;Hitchcock and Willard 2002;Isaksson 2004;Jonker 2000;Kuei and Lu 2013;Narasimhan and Schoenherr 2012;Rusinko 2005;Srdić and Šelih 2011;Wiengarten and Pagell 2012;Yang, Huang, and Ke 2012). Quality improvement contributes to business sustainability in many ways.…”

“…Integrated assessment combines two or all three sustainability elements. It includes the qualitative assessment, e.g., conceptual modelling that presents the relationships between different elements in the form of flow diagrams, flow charts, or causal loop diagrams [35,37], and Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA) that allows evaluation of competing criteria such as the assessment approach used in RSPO certification. Integrated assessment could also be quantitative, e.g., hybrid of LCA with Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Input Output Life Cycle Assessment (IOA) and other methods [38] and remodeling of other elements, i.e., economic and social aspects, into LCA [39].…”

“…The sustainable development requires a balanced analysis in social, economic and environment dimensions of sustainability, including the construction sector impacts (Srdić, Šelih 2011;Henriques et al 2015). Retrofitting is a sustainable practice and applying it at a city, street or block scale has more environmental and economic benefits than at a building scale (Dall'O et al 2012).…”
