A Derivation of Factors Influencing the Innovation Diffusion of the OpenStreetMap in STEM Education

Geographic information is a confluence of knowledge from spatial science, information technologies, engineering, and mathematics, etc. Effective spatial training can enhance achievement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Therefore, the geographic information system (GIS) plays a daily role in modern STEM education. Volunteered Geographical Information (VGI) is characterized by the openness of the geographic information being generated and accumulated by volunteers. Within the VGI sphere, OpenStreetMap (OSM) is one of the most well-known VGI due to its openness, flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and web-based mapping capability, making it one of the best alternatives for use as the mapping application for STEM education. However, very few or no prior works have investigated the factors influencing the innovation diffusion of OSM in STEM education. Therefore, to fill this gap, this work aims to investigate these factors. To achieve this purpose, the authors have defined an analytic framework based on innovation diffusion theory (IDT) and the technology acceptance model (TAM). The factors influencing students’ acceptance and intention to continue using and diffusing OSM in STEM education will be investigated. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to confirm the hypothesized IDT–TAM integrated model. An empirical study based on sample data collected from 145 Taiwanese undergraduate and graduate students from engineering-related institutes was used to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed analytic framework and to derive the factors related to the adoption and diffusion of OSM in STEM education. The proposed theoretical framework forged in this study was proven to be successful. Based on the empirical study results, ease of use, observability, and compatibility are the most influential factors in OSM diffusion. Therefore, activities that enhance the ease of use, observability, and compatibility of OSM should be emphasized so that STEM students’ perception of the usefulness of the technology and their perceived attitude towards it leads to the intention to continue the use of OSM. The analytic results can serve as a foundation for the design, development, and accelerated adoption and diffusion of OSM in STEM education.

Approximate Query Answering Based on Topological Neighborhood and Semantic Similarity in OpenStreetMap

In this paper we focus on a pictorial query language, referred to as Geographical Pictorial Query Language (GeoPQL), and we revise its formal semantics by considering the polygon-polyline, polyline-polyline, and polygon-polygon topological relationships. This work proposes the Approximate Answering Engine (AAE) within a Distributed System, referred to as GeoPQLJSON (GeoPQLJ). The AAE provides approximate answers to query with empty results by following two directions: the Operator Conceptual Neighborhood (OCN) graph, and the OpenStreetMap (OSM) attribute hierarchy, giving maximum flexibility to the user choices. According to the former, the geo-operators of the queries can be replaced with the ones labeling the adjacent nodes of the OCN graph. By following the latter, the system evaluates the OSM attribute semantic similarity according to the information content approach, and proposes possible attribute replacements to the user. Note that the presence of OSM attributes allows the quick and direct access to large amount of geographical data, without requiring in our case the use of the topological elements. The functionalities of the Distributed GeoPQLJ System are illustrated by several query examples.

Linked Open Data (LOD) has been proliferated over various domains, however, there are still lots of open data in various format other than RDF, a standard data description framework in LOD. These open data can also be connected to entities in LOD when they are associated with URIs. Document-centric XML data are such open data that are connected with entities in LOD as supplemental documents for these entities, and to convert these XML data into RDF requires various techniques such as information extraction, ontology design and ontology mapping with human prior knowledge. To utilize document-centric XML data linked from entities in LOD, in this paper, a SPARQL-based seamless access method on RDF and XML data is proposed. In particular, an extension to SPARQL, XQueryFILTER, which enables XQuery as a filter in SPARQL is proposed. For efficient query processing of the combination of SPARQL and XQuery, a database theory-based query optimization is proposed. Real-world scenario-based experiments in this paper showcase that effectiveness of XQueryFILTER and efficiency of the optimization.
