Integrating narratives into decision making for complex systems engineering design issues

Abstract: was a pre doctoral researcher with the Simulation, Modeling, and Decision Science program at the Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory in Ames, Iowa while the research for this paper was performed. Currently, she is the Senior User Experience Design Researcher at Honeywell's Building Technologies where she leads user experience research planning and implementation. Ms. Prisacari is the founding member and current president of the ACM SIGCHI chapter in Minneapolis-St. Paul. Ms. Prisacari received a bachelor's … Show more

“…Writing in 2018, Cameron A. MacKenzie et al argue that qualitative understandings of design requirements can be valuable for improving engineers' knowledge of how to build and design products. 25 MacKenzie et al's work is helpful for the present article, for history shows that narratives can alter political calculations, influencing leaders' decisions around uses of force.…”

“…Based on our review of Design Society literature, our exploration of narratology research, and the recent work of scholars in economics, psychology, and business, we posit that narrative plays four major roles in engineering design. These four roles are similar to the three ways (analysis, simulation, consensus) in which MacKenzie et al (2020) propose narrative can be used in engineering design decision-making. Narrative is the way that we: 1.…”

“…[31] In particular, they focus on the need to link engineering design with climate and sustainability contexts, incorporate various disciplines into engineering solutions, consider justice and ethics dimensions, and collaborate with diverse communities. Other approaches, such as engineering leadership, [11,32,33] engineering design, [34,35] and emerging learning environments, [36] offer integrated forms of education.…”
