Integrating Open-Source Datasets to Analyze the Transboundary Water–Food–Energy–Climate Nexus in Central Asia

Jan De Keyser,
Daniel S. Hayes,
Beatrice Marti
et al.

Abstract: In today’s intrinsically connected world, the Water–Food–Energy–Climate Nexus (WFEC Nexus) concept provides a starting point for informed and transparent decision-making based on the trade-offs and synergies between different sectors, including aquatic ecosystems, food security, energy production, and climate neutrality. The WFEC Nexus approach is particularly applicable in regions requiring transboundary water management, such as Central Asia. Unfortunately, this region with unevenly distributed water resourc… Show more

“…In addition, to obtain accurate and sustainable results from WEF analyses, future studies should consider the environment in their analyses, particularly in the ASB. De Keyser et al [68] contributed to addressing this data gap through the dissemination of open-source geodata aimed at facilitating WEF research in Central Asia. Basin-wide coverage is required wherever WEF nexus studies do not focus on local-level or small-scale issues.…”

“…Among the many challenges currently facing the world, the issues of water scarcity, energy supplies, food security, and ecological degradation have become prominent [7]. With the backdrop of growing environmental constraints and human activity, ecological vulnerability has been made worse by the notable rise in the demand for food, energy, and water [8,9], has reduced the natural environment's ability to self-regulate and repair, and has increased the pressure on the external environment [10].…”
