Integrating technology into K-12 teaching and learning: current knowledge gaps and recommendations for future research

Abstract: Although research studies in education show that use of technology can help student learning, its use is generally affected by certain barriers. In this paper, we first identify the general barriers typically faced by K-12 schools, both in the United States as well as other countries, when integrating technology into the curriculum for instructional purposes, namely: (a) resources, (b) institution, (c) subject culture, (d) attitudes and beliefs, (e) knowledge and skills, and (f) assessment. We then describe th… Show more

“…Not only are there challenges of PBL but also challenges of technology integration which combine to create even more complex challenges of technology-based PBL. Hew and Brush (2007) presented barriers typically found in using technology. They identified lack of time, lack of access to technology and technical support, the institutional environment, classroom management issues, and an assessment-focused culture that allows limited time for innovative teaching practice.…”

“…Literature has indicated two important factors related to teachers' use of PBL: their pedagogical beliefs and the scaffolding they provide to their students (Ertmer, 2005;Hew & Brush, 2007;Pedersen & Liu, 2003;Windschitl & Sahl, 2002). Ertmer (2005) suggested teachers' pedagogical beliefs play an important role in high-level technology use such as student-centered learning environments like PBL.…”

“…Access to information and communication technologies (ICTs) in schools has risen dramatically in recent years, but the integration of these tools in teaching and learning has not shown consistent comparable gains (Hew and Brush 2007). Research reveals remarkable variation in the use of ICTs, with some subject areas consistently showing more integration of technology than others (Hennessy, Ruthven, and Brindley 2005;Howard 2009).…”
