Integrating the flexibility of the average Serbian consumer as a virtual storage option into the planning of energy systems

Abstract: With the integration of more variable renewable energy, the need for storage is growing. Rather than utility scale storage, smart grid technology (not restricted, but mainly involving bidirectional communication between the supply and demand side and dynamic pricing) enables flexible consumption to be a virtual storage alternative for moderation of the production of variable renewable energy sources on the micro grid level. A study, motivated with energy loss allocation, electric demand and t… Show more

“…However, Serbia is energy dependent on imports as 30% of its energy demand is met by purchasing from foreign markets, a reason sound enough to direct more investments into energy efficiency increase [6]. Serbia's thermal power plants are among the biggest polluters in Europe and the only question remaining is how to stimulate the substitution of these plants by new ones which produce electricity from renewable sources [7]. New Energy law passed in 2021 in the Republic of Serbia, for the first time actively emphasizes the importance of renewable energy sources, by introducing the role of prosumers.…”

“…The heat sector is the first one to be considered in SEP, particularly exploiting flexibilities in the heat storage of CHP [64,148,154]. A joint power-heat SEP has become more relevant with time [67,134,135,143,151,153,156,158,159]. For example, down to the level of individual buildings, there are clear examples of ESS able to support DSM mechanisms and to provide flexibility.…”

“…Choice of actions and measures for reduction of CO 2 and implementation of renewables was analysed in [24] and new methodology for selection of ac-tions is proposed in [25]. Penetration of more renewables could be increased with the implementation of smart grid technology similar to one described in [26]. One of the key measures that are implemented in all municipalities is the replacement of public lightning and it is recommended to follow the methodology developed in [27] when dealing with this measure.…”
