The Jequié Block is located at the northeastern portion of the São Francisco Craton and represents the Archean tectonic paleoplate that hosts the Jequié Complex. The rocks of the Jequié Complex are cogenetic, enderbitic-charnockitic plutons, which were intruded by gabbros, norites and anorthosites, and subsequently all these rocks were re-equilibrated in granulite facies. Three bauxite occurrences were mapped at the southeastern portion of the Jequié Block, named Itaji (ITJ), Casa de Farinha (CDF) and Valentim (VLT), which are hosted by the bedrock of the units Poço Preto and Santa Inês -Volta do Rio. The Poço Preto Unit is composed of granulitic granodiorites to tonalities, while Santa Inês -Volta do Rio is composed of granulitic granites to granodiorites. The stream sediment results highlighted good geographic correlation between the content of Al, Fe, REE+Y+Sc and Ce in the catchments at the mineralized area. On the ITJ, the vertical profile indicates a lateritic sequence composed of the bedrock (i), saprock (ii), saprolite (iii) and pedolith (iv), while the upper part is the lateritic duricrust (v). The results of petrography, X-ray powder diffraction and whole rock geochemistry, supports the lateritic evolution. This vertical profile was later redeposited through surficial process in a proximal place. The breakdown of K-feldspar and plagioclase into kaolinite started at the weathering front and was continuously intensified towards the saprolite, as well as the transformation of the biotite and amphibole into goethite. The halloysite was identified as an intermediate mineral between the K-feldspar and kaolinite. The kaolinite locally was represented by its polymorph dickite. The transformation of the kaolinite into gibbsite happened between the saprolite and the pedolith, the main reaction in terms of the mineralization was the pseudomorphic feldspar replacement by gibbsite. The presence of the nordstrandite at CDF could be related to local conditions of the weathering, and/or to the bedrock geochemical composition in the region.

O cruzamento dos dados gamaspectrométricos (crostas lateríticas) com os dados aeromagnetométricos propiciou a identifi cação das possíveis rochas fontes das crostas lateríticas, havendo associação tanto com rochas com tendências mais magnéticas, relacionadas a litologias básicas quanto a rochas com tendências menos magnéticas, relacionadas a litoglogias félsicas. Por fi m, o mapeamento do regolito contribuiu para a identifi cação de 8 unidades regolíticas presentes na área, sendo elas latossolos associados a relevo suavemente ondulado, latossolos argilosos associados a planícies sem a presença de morrotes e afl oramentos de matacões rochosos, latossolos arenosos associados a planícies com a presença de afl oramentos de matacões rochosos, morrotes e platôs, cambissolos associados a planícies, crostas lateríticas associadas a relevo suavemente ondulado, crostas lateríticas associadas a platôs, sedimentos aluvionares associados a planícies de inundação e afl oramentos rochosos graníticos. Estes resultados mostraram-se úteis para interpretações geomorfológicas, assim como na identifi cação de áreas mais ou menos favoráveis para a agricultura, considerando sua respectiva fertilidade, e para a construção civil, considerando a utilidade do cascalho laterítico, podendo também contribuir em estudos voltados para o planejamento urbano/ rural, por destacar a ocorrência de materiais superfi ciais assim como as respectivas formas de relevo associadas.

The lateritic index (LI) has been applied to identify new areas with the potential to contain rare earth elements (REE) ion adsorption deposit (IAD) associated with the Serra Dourada granite, similar to those found in the south part of this granite. This granite has high contents of ∑REE that are distributed in different types of minerals, which upon weathering release the REE into the laterite profile. Another important aspect is the degree of weathering of this laterite profile and the percolating fluids that lead to the retention of REE in the profile, mainly adsorbed on clay minerals. This results in REE enrichment associated with the clay layer. The correlation of gamma spectrometry and altimetry data indicated that the LI in this granitic body is uneven and, is dependent on the intensity of the surface denudation. The higher LI is identified in the southern part of this body, where a supergene REE deposit has been identified and is under development. However, this higher LI is also found in other parts of this granite, which could represent new potential areas to be explored.
