Integration of partial information for spoken and written sentence recognition by older listeners

Abstract: Older adults have difficulty understanding speech in challenging listening environments. Combining multisensory signals may facilitate speech recognition. This study measured recognition of interrupted spoken and written sentences by older adults for different preserved stimulus proportions. Unimodal performance was first examined when only interrupted text or speech stimuli were presented. Multimodal performance with concurrently presented text and speech stimuli was tested with delayed and simultaneous parti… Show more

“…Applications of the TRT task to sentences have varied in a number of important parameters, such as whether the sentences are presented word by word or as a whole, the color of text and masker bars, the timing of text presentation, and the number of masker bars per sentence (Krull et al, 2013;Smith & Fogerty, 2016;Zekveld et al, 2007). Whereas some of these parameters, such as color or display size, are text specific, others have ready analogues to parameters from auditory experiments of speech perception in which portions of the speech signal are periodically interrupted by masking noise or replaced with silence.…”

“…6, middle and right columns). Consistent with previous literature, the benefit of text was larger when the auditory signal integrity was lower (Smith & Fogerty 2015, 2016; Krull & Humes 2016; Fogerty et al 2020). The present study adds to previous research by revealing that the text benefit was significant in all facial cue conditions.…”
