PurposeThe intelligent Central Traffic Control (CTC) system plays a vital role in establishing an intelligent high-speed railway (HSR) system. As the core of HSR transportation command, the intelligent CTC system is a new HSR dispatching command system that integrates the widely used CTC in China with the practical service requirements of intelligent dispatching. This paper aims to propose key technologies and applications for intelligent dispatching command in HSR in China.Design/methodology/approachThis paper first briefly introduces the functions and configuration of the intelligent CTC system. Some new servers, terminals and interfaces are introduced, which are plan adjustment server/terminal, interface for automatic train operation (ATO), interface for Dynamic Monitoring System of Train Control Equipment (DMS), interface for Power Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (PSCADA), interface for Disaster Monitoring, etc.FindingsThe key technologies applied in the intelligent CTC system include automatic adjustment of train operation plans, safety control of train routes and commands, traffic information data platform, integrated simulation of traffic dispatching and ATO function. These technologies have been applied in the Beijing-Zhangjiakou HSR, which commenced operations at the end of 2019. Implementing these key intelligent functions has improved the train dispatching command capacity, ensured the safe operation of intelligent HSR, reduced the labor intensity of dispatching operators and enhanced the intelligence level of China's dispatching system.Originality/valueThis paper provides further challenges and research directions for the intelligent dispatching command of HSR. To achieve the objectives, new measures need to be conducted, including the development of advanced technologies for intelligent dispatching command, coping with new requirements with the development of China's railway signaling system, the integration of traffic dispatching and train control and the application of AI and data-driven modeling and methods.

Rescheduling Out-of-Gauge Trains with Speed Restrictions and Temporal Blockades on the Opposite-Direction Track

Out-of-gauge trains are trains with loading freight that exceeds the loading limitation border. Considering collision avoidance, the out-of-gauge trains have speed restriction of their own, and the trains running on the parallel track. Therefore, it is necessary to execute a train rescheduling procedure to rearrange the train paths of the out-of-gauge trains and the affected trains based on the fundamental timetable. For rescheduling the timetable, considering the blockades and the speed restrictions caused by the out-of-gauge trains, this paper proposed a time-space-state network representation for describing the out-of-gauge train rescheduling problem. A novel concept, speed allowance, is introduced to describe the train speed restriction due to the out-of-gauge trains. An integer programming model based on the time-space network is proposed to minimize the total train delay when running the out-of-gauge trains. The model can be solved by the rolling-time horizon approach for reducing computational time. A numerical example is conducted based on the conventional railway in China, demonstrating the solution performance of the model and the practical use of the methodology. Gurobi solver cannot obtain an optimal solution within 1 h when the planning-time horizon is greater than 120 min. With the rolling-time horizon approach, the rescheduled timetable can be obtained within 124 s for the 300 min planning-time horizon using 180 min rolling-time window.

The arrival interval at high-speed railway stations is one of the key factors that restrict the improvement of the train following intervals. In the process of practical railway operation, sudden conflicts occur sometimes. Especially when the conflict arises at the station, because the home signal cannot be opened in time, the emergency may affect the adjustment of the train operation under the scheduled timetable, resulting in a longer train following interval or even delay. With the development of artificial intelligence and the deep integration of big data, the architecture of train operation control and dispatch integration is gradually improving from the theoretical point. Based on this and inspired by the Green Wave policy, we propose an integrated operation method that reduces the arrival interval by avoiding unnecessary stops in front of the home signal and increasing the running speed of trains through the throat area. It is a two-step optimization method combining both intelligent optimization and mathematical–theoretical analysis algorithms. In the first step, the recommended approaching speed and position are obtained by analytical calculation. In the second step, the speed profile from the current position to the position corresponding to the recommended approaching speed is optimized by intelligent optimization algorithms. Finally, the integrated method is verified through the analysis of two distinct case studies. The first case study utilizes data from the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed railway line, while the second one is based on the field test. The numerical result shows that the proposed method could save the entry running time effectively, compared with the normal strategy given by the train driver. The method can mitigate controllable conflict events occurring at the station and provides theoretical support for practical operation.
