Integrative and comprehensive Understanding on Polar Environments (iCUPE): the concept and initial results

Abstract: The role of polar regions increases in terms of megatrends such as globalization, new transport routes, demography and use of natural resources consequent effects of regional and transported pollutant concentrations. We set up the ERA-PLANET Strand 4 project "iCUPE -integrative and Comprehensive Understanding on Polar Environments" to provide novel insights and observational data on global grand challenges with an Arctic focus. We utilize an integrated approach combining 55 in situ observations, satellite remo… Show more

“…In this section, three different types of UAS of the Institute of Flight Guidance, TU Braunschweig, with different meteorological payloads are introduced. They were applied in the polar areas in the time period 2013 to 2018 [16][17][18]. Each system is presented in the following, and a quick overview of the performed polar campaigns is provided, summarized in Table 1.…”

“…ALADINA was used as a link between different aerosol observatories in Svalbard (Norway). Research flights were performed in spring 2018 at the airfield in Ny-Ålesund and first results are presented in [18]. The research village of Ny-Ålesund is located at Kongsfjord and surrounded by mountains up to 700 m ASL and glaciers.…”

“…In order to address these changes, provision of observational data in the Arctic region has been identified as a key requirement in the Arctic Observation Summit (AOS) by Sustaining Arctic Observation Network (SAON, e.g. Murray et al 2020) including the marine (Vihma et al 2019) and comprehensive atmospheric observations (Hari et al 2016;Uttal et al 2016) as well as integration of in-situ and satellite remote sensing (Petäjä et al 2020).…”

“…Collaborative research in Russia has been focused on CC, AQ, dynamics of the land-atmosphere interactions and feedbacks covering topics like permafrost thawing, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and sink processes, aerosol formation, environmental health and Artic greening and browning (e.g. Paasonen et al, 2013;Ezhova et al, 2018Ezhova et al, , 2020Petäjä et al, 2020). In China, INAR's collaboration interest has been on understanding the complex air pollution cocktail (Kulmala, 2015) including feedbacks with boundary layer processes and atmospheric aerosol population (Ding et al, 2016a;Petäjä et al, 2016), particularly in the most polluted megacity environments.…”
