Integrative metabolomic and transcriptomic analysis reveals difference in glucose and lipid metabolism in the longissimus muscle of Luchuan and Duroc pigs

Abstract: Luchuan pig, an obese indigenous Chinese porcine breed, has a desirable meat quality and reproductive capacity. Duroc, a traditional western breed, shows a faster growth rate, high feed efficiency and high lean meat rate. Given the unique features these two porcine breeds have, it is of interest to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms behind their distinctive nature. In this study, the metabolic and transcriptomic profiles of longissimus dorsi muscle from Duroc and Luchuan pigs were compared. A tota… Show more

“…There are many immune cells in the blood, which are related to the disease resistance of pigs. Disease resistance and fat content are two traits that differ greatly between Eastern and Western pigs [ 6 , 7 , 8 ]. The above results indicated that AS might ultimately lead to the differences between the two traits of Eastern and Western pigs through its effects on these two tissues.…”

“…Throughout their long domestication process, these two pig types have developed distinct genetic characteristics and ecological habits [ 4 , 5 ]. For example, Western pigs have a faster growth rate, while Eastern pigs have stronger disease resistance and fat content [ 6 , 7 , 8 ].…”

“…Both fructose and mannose metabolism play an important role in glucose uptake and energy metabolism. Glycolysis/gluconeogenesis is closely related to glucose metabolism, fatty acid uptake and oxidation [ 51 ]. Interestingly, the parent genes of the putative m6A-circRNA contained in these pathways include EGF and PFKM, which numerous studies have shown to be extensively involved in lipid synthesis and catabolism.…”
