The production of Capsicum chinense Jacq. is an economically important activity in Mexico. Trichoderma harzianum inoculation and pruning to three and four stems on plant growth, fruit quality, and yield of C. chinense was evaluated. A factorial experimental design A (inoculation and non-inoculation of T. harzianum) × B (pruning to three and four stems) was employed, establishing four treatments. The plant height, stem diameter, fruit quality (fruit- weight, length, and width), and yield (fruits plant-1, g plant-1, and t ha-1) were measured. Inoculation of T. harzianum increased plant height (from 4.3 to 7.9%), without favoring yield. Pruning to three stems increased the plant height (from 7.7 to 14.5%), fruit weight (7.7%), and yield [fruits plant-1 (25.8%), g plant-1 (26.3%), and t ha-1 (26.3%)]. Inoculated plants with T. harzianum and pruned to three stems showed the best yield (15.38 t ha-1) compared to plants inoculated with T. harzianum and pruned to four stems (10.71 t ha-1). T. harzianum favored the vegetative growth, while pruning improved fruit weight and the yield of C. chinense.

The global demand for sustainable agricultural practices is increasing, necessitating the preference for fertilizers and organic stimulants with minimal chemical transformation. This study investigates the potential use of Mucuna (Mucuna pruriens sp.) and avocado (Persea americana Mills) seed residues in the cultivation of cherry-tomato crops (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) var. cerasiforme. After extracting L-dopa, the Mucuna ground residual seeds were incorporated into the soil substrate as an edaphic fertilizer. In contrast, the hydrolyzed avocado seed was mixed with water or the nutrient Long Ashton and applied as a foliar biostimulant to cherry plants grown in a greenhouse. We report the nutrients and amino acid content in hydrolysates of the avocado and Mucuna’s residue seeds and experiment with their effect in plants employing a completely blocked random design of eight treatments with four replicates. Data inspection involved analysis of variance, and mean differences were determined using Fisher’s least significant difference test. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed among the treatments regarding the number of flowers (70%), fruits (23%), and dry weight fruits (25%) in favor of those using these seed residues. A second experiment revealed that treatments containing both seed residues slightly increased the °Brix in fruits. This study supports with evidence that residual seeds benefit tomatoes and probably other important plants, contributing to the path to sustainable agriculture.

El uso de sustratos minerales locales de bajo costo y soluciones nutritivas con la composición química adecuada pueden ser la alternativa para maximizar el potencial de producción de tomate cherry (Solanum lycopersicum L.). El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar sustratos de la zona de Nayarit en combinación con soluciones nutritivas, sobre el crecimiento, contenido nutrimental y producción de tomate cherry. La investigación se realizó en Nayarit, México. El diseño experimental fue completamente al azar con arreglo bifactorial, los factores fueron los sustratos piedra pómez y tezontle, y las soluciones nutritivas de Steiner y Castellanos, esto originó cuatro tratamientos con 11 repeticiones, donde una repetición fue una planta a dos tallos. Se determinaron las variables altura de planta, diámetro de tallo, área foliar, biomasa seca de parte aérea, biomasa seca de raíz, producción de fruto por planta, unidades SPAD y contenido nutrimental foliar (N, P y K). Los resultados mostraron que la solución nutritiva de Steiner incrementó la producción de fruto y también el crecimiento evaluado en altura de planta, diámetro de tallo y biomasa seca de raíz. El contenido nutrimental de N, P y K fue superior con la solución de Castellanos. En el sustrato piedra pómez la producción de fruto, crecimiento de planta y contenido nutrimental fueron más altos en relación a las plantas en tezontle. Se concluyó que el sustrato piedra pómez en combinación con la solución nutritiva de Steiner fue la más viable para tomate cherry, ya que favoreció el crecimiento de planta y producción de fruto.
