Intensified Charge Coupled Device-Based Fiber-Optic Monitor for Rapid Remote Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Sensing

Abstract: This paper describes the development of an intensified charge coupled device (ICCD)-based fiber-optic monitor for remote Raman and surface-enhanced Raman (SERS) sensing. Both Raman and SERS data were obtained with the use of a fiber-optic probe design incorporating 20-m optical fibers carrying the Raman signal. Spectra were obtained in 5 milliseconds for Raman and 9 ms for SERS. The proposed system could be used for a highly sensitive portable Raman system for rapid and remote chemical sensing.

“…Rarely are sensors described which can offer all of these features. For example, spectral selectivity is offered by optical sensors based on vibrational spectroscopies such as infrared (Feldhaeuser et al, 1989), Raman (Williams, 1990;Iqbal et al, 1991), and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopies (Dai et al, 1992;Alarie et al, 1992;Angel et al, 1992). However, sensitivity has suffered in these areas.…”

“…This perpendicular arrangement implies the interaction of both amino head groups with different Ag NPs, favouring NP aggregation thanks to the bifunctional nature of ADs and leading to the formation of an NP dimer, where interparticle junctions acting as hot spots are readily formed. Additionally, these bifunctional diamines are completely protonated in the colloidal suspension, presenting two positively charged nitrogen atoms at the side ends of the alkyl chain, which are able to strongly Hexagonal adsorption model for AD8 on Ag NPs and formation of interparticle hot spot junctions and intermolecular cavities where the analyte can be hosted.…”
