The revolution of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPASs), both in the commercial and the research field, has accelerated the arrival of innovative and complex services to the civilian environment within non-segregated airspace. The extensive deployment of these services will still require solving relevant challenges in several topics, such as regulation, security, or diverse technical defiance. In particular, the services to be provided increasingly demand network resources and performance improvements. This scenario will be strongly exacerbated by the upcoming resources provided by the 5G/6G architectures, where Remotely Piloted Aircrafts (RPAs) will likely support multiple communication interfaces and will be able to establish multi-hop network connectivity with numerous devices leading to an unprecedented hyper-connected RPA environment. In addition, future RPASs will have to enhance the management of their connectivity capabilities to comply with the latest regulations, which demand an uninterrupted link for the Control and Non-Payload Communications (CNPC). This article presents a flexible Communication Infrastructure Manager (CIM) based on Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and virtualization technologies capable of handling the complexity inherent to this ecosystem and being adapted to different operation requirements to cope with all these communication challenges. Finally, the article shows several validation experiences to demonstrate the potential of the CIM versus the standard approach.

Over the past few years, network traffic has grown exponentially with the rise in mobile communication network users and services. This, in turn, increased the operational complexity and hiked the capital and operational expenses of mobile network operations. Present mobile networks are highly complex systems comprising automation mechanisms that leverage numerous technologies. These technologies and automation tools have been developed to deal with the configuration, optimization, and troubleshooting of mobile network operations, facilitating an efficient network management. Self-Organizing Networks (SONs) are an example of one such technology that aims to decrease human intervention by automating network management tasks. Although SON is used widely as an automation tool, it has some shortcomings; particularly, maintenance and upgrade of a rule-based management system like SON are challenging. To address these shortcomings, research is aimed at incorporating machine learning (ML) capabilities in SON and introduced a new management paradigm called cognitive autonomous networks (CANs). Like SON, CAN consists of multiple network automation functions called cognitive functions (CFs). A CF is an intelligent network function that is responsible for managing specific optimization related tasks. Throughout this thesis, we use the following CFs that are relevant for the use cases covered in this thesis: mobility load balancing (MLB), mobility robustness optimization (MRO), coverage and capacity optimization (CCO), and energy savings (ES). These functions have already been standardized by both the network operator community as well as the standardization bodies for SON use cases.These CFs operate on the same radio network in parallel and learn to optimize the same set of radio network parameters. Since they work independently but simultaneously try to adjust the same set of parameters, conflicts are likely to happen among them. These conflicts need to be resolved to keep the network stable and the network operations uninterrupted. The conflicts can be resolved by introducing some coordination among the CFs. In this thesis, we evaluate different paradigms of coordination for CAN and establish that centralized coordination is the most beneficial for CAN. In the first part of the thesis, we propose solutions for centralized coordination for conflict resolution among the CFs. These solutions are based on the Nash Social Welfare Function (NSWF) and a more advanced version of NSWF, the Fisher Market Model, combined with Eisenberg-Gale optimization. Our proposed solutions are designed to serve the combined interest of all the CFs while resolving a conflict. Cognitive autonomous networks imply that networks will independently derive and execute intelligent decisions, and thereby elevating the human operator's role to a higher level of abstraction. At that level, the operator only specifies the desired outcomes, called intents, which must then be supported by corresponding intent-driven capabilities in the network or its management functions. Although, Intent-Driven Management (IDM) has been published in multiple works, there is still no globally agreed end?to?end view of such IDM systems, let alone a globally agreed definition of intents. This paper provides a comprehensive discussion on the core aspects of IDM systems and combines them into an end-to-end system view with the related example solutions. Contrasting against a short review of related scientific and standards literature, the paper introduces a flexible, generic definition of intents and an end-to-end IDM system architecture as well as the related modeling of intents to support their standardization. The paper also introduces implementation examples fitting the architecture and discusses advanced IDM features that need to be provided, including the ability to detect and resolve conflicts between intents.
