Inter- and intra-specific genetic diversity of Iranian yarrow species Achillea santolina and Achillea tenuifolia based on ISSR and RAPD markers

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Cultivation and preservation of yarrow has recently attracted wide attention due to its beneficial properties; however, genetic variation of Achillea species is still relatively unknown. We used RAPD and ISSR markers to assess genetic diversity in 16 accessions of yarrow belonging to two species native to Iran. Seven ISSR and nine RAPD primers generated 187 amplified fragments, of which 159 were polymorphic. The similarity coefficient among Achillea tenuifolia accessions ranged from 61 to 86%, and fr… Show more

“…ISSR markers are one of the most efficient marker systems because of their capacity to reveal several informative bands from a single amplification [20]. The marker has a high polymorphic degree among closely related varieties, along with high levels of repeatability and reliability which are efficiently used for assessing genetic variation in different crops such as Achillea species [21,22], melon [23], Zingiber officinale [24], and cowpea [25]. Shortages in water resources are expected sooner or later in many parts of the world due to climate change and overpopulation [26].…”

“…These results have a high paramount to the success of a breeding program that mainly depends on the availability of a broad genetic base. Also, the maintaining of genetic diversity is one of the most important objectives in preserving endangered and threatened plants (Akbari et al, 2018;Ebrahimi et al, 2012aEbrahimi et al, , 2012bFarajpour et al, 2011;Daneshvar, 2016a, 2016b;Khadivi-Khub et al, 2012). The knowledge of genetic diversity among populations gives some essential details in the formulation of suitable management strategies for preserving (Francisco-Ortega et al, 2000;Milligan et al, 1994).…”

“…Based on the cluster analysis there was a moderate diversity among the four studied onion genotypes. These variation is due to genetic factors among the samples (Ebrahimi et al 2012;Farajpour et al 2017;Boroomand et al 2018;Hassanabadi et al 2019). Among the parameters, DM and POD activity had the highest positive correlation coefficient with each other (r= 0.76; P<0.01; Figure 5).…”
