Interaction of Microbiota between Fish and the Environment of an In-Pond Raceway System in a Lake

Abstract: Due to its ability to collect and remove aquaculture waste, an in-pond raceway system (IPRS) has been used to decrease the uncontrolled waste discharge in the traditional cage aquaculture method in large water bodies. However, when applied to large water bodies, its environmental performance is still lacking. This study focused on analyzing the microbial characteristics and the interaction between largemouth bass (gill and gut) microbiota and the environment (water and sediment) microbiota of an IPRS. Further,… Show more

“…This is probably due to the different cultivation and pond management modes of grass carp culture at different stages, which changes the physicochemical indices of the pond and affects the water and sediment microbiota. Moreover, fish microbiota is one of the primary sources of sediment microbiota, and >15% of the sediment microbiota is derived from fish ( Zhang et al, 2022 ). Therefore, the differences in water and sediment microbiota in different ponds were probably caused by differences in the gut microbiota of grass carp of different sizes.…”

“…Habitat microbiota is an important factor affecting the microbiota structure of aquaculture organisms ( Liu et al, 2021 ; Zhang et al, 2022 ; Giatsis et al, 2015 ), and is closely related to the health of aquaculture organisms ( De Schryver et al, 2012 ; Chen et al, 2017 ; Kaktcham et al, 2017 ; Huang et al, 2018 )). A. hydrophila ( Song et al, 2017 ) , Citrobacter spp.…”

“…RF acts as a small ecosystem, with microorganisms widely distributed in the fish, water, soil, and plants. Microorganisms attached to water bodies, weeds, and phytoplankton can colonize the gut of common carp through their feeding activities and have an impact on the fish (Zhang et al, 2022). The microorganisms in the fish gut also spread into the water and soil with the fish excretion, while some strains of bacteria can colonize the water body and, thus, improve the water environment.…”

“…The potential activity of Alteromonadales was also higher in feces of fish reared at the two higher temperatures. Results reveal a high degree of shared bacterial between water and fish, since the rearing water microbiota in the RAS systems is one of the primary sources of microbiota in the fish, but the fish microbiota will also settle in the water (Zhang et al, 2022).…”
