Interactions between gnathiid isopods, cleaner fish and other fishes on Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef

Abstract: The rate of emergence of micropredatory gnathiid isopods from the benthos, the proportion of emerging gnathiids potentially eaten by Labroides dimidiatus, and the volume of blood that gnathiids potentially remove from fishes (using gnathiid gut volume) were determined. The abundance (mean AE S.E.) of emerging gnathiids was 41Á7 AE 6Á9 m À2 day À1 and 4552 AE 2632 reef À1 day À1 (reefs 91-125 m 2 ). The abundance of emerging gnathiids per fish on the reef was 4Á9 AE 0Á8 day À1 ; but excluding the rarely infeste… Show more

“…The number of intertidal gnathiids collected from C. superciliosus at this site was much smaller than those typically collected from coral reef habitats (Grutter & Poulin, 1998b;Grutter, 1999Grutter, , 2008Welicky et al, 2013;Sikkel et al, 2017). There are at least three possible explanations for this difference.…”

“…Ectoparasites compromise the fitness of their hosts via several mechanisms. They inflict not only direct costs via skin damage and blood consumption but also indirect costs via increasing the chance to secondary infections with opportunistic pathogens Grutter, 2005, 2008;Grutter, 2008), and thereby the need to activate inflammatory responses, which are energetically costly (Sheldon and Verhulst, 1996;Watts et al, 2001;Alcorn et al, 2003;Demas, 2004). Furthermore, experimental infection with ectoparasites has been shown to increase the corticosteroid stress response of salmonids (Ruane et al, 1999(Ruane et al, , 2000Wagner et al, 2008).…”

“…In reef fish gnathiid isopods have been shown to cause skin damage, reduced blood volume, reduced growth, and sometimes even death Grutter, 2005, 2008;Grutter, 2008, but see Grutter and Pankhurst, 2000). It is thus expected that ectoparasite removal would be beneficial for reef fish.…”

“…What is already known about gnathiids on adult fishes (i.e. prevalence, and feeding ecology) (Grutter 1995a(Grutter ,1996a(Grutter ,2003Grutter 2008) suggests that they may also significantly affect young reef fish.…”
