“…To clarify these results a primary role of increased hepatic synthesis of HDL in alternate diet regimen and a better adaptation of liver metabolism to plasma lipid overload as compared to continuous cholesterol administration can be reasonably sustained [42]. Regarding systemic inflammatory state and endothelial activation no significant changes among groups were evidenced in any of measured markers, in contrast with other reports [40] [43]- [45]. This outcome can be attributed to the shorttime diet duration and the very early stage of coronary atherogenesis process documented by histology.…”

“…Moreover, the plasma levels of ICAM-1 shows parallelism with the significance of inflammation in diseases and it is elevated in various diseases such as infectious, inflammatory and neoplastic (Li et al, 1999;Hajilooi et al, 2004;Huang et al;Miller et al, 2007;Fotis et al, 2012).…”

“…The expression of ICAM-1 was detected in the endothelial cells in various inflammatory cases especially in infectious diseases both in vivo and in vitro studies (Reiss et al, 1998;Deeths & Mescher, 1999;Fotis et al;Hajilooi et al;).…”

“…With the accumulation of lipoproteins within the arterial subendothelium, a critical multi-process step ensues including the recruitment of monocytes, which trigger the activation of endothelial cells and the subsequent induction of pro-inflammatory genes including those coding for adhesion molecules, such as intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) (Fotis et al, 2012). It has been established that one of the key transcriptional regulators, NF-κB and its downstream signaling pathway, may play an important role in high glucose-induced endothelial dysfunction (Chen et al, 2009;Li et al, 2011).…”
