Interconnection of the immune system and the intensity of the oxidative processes under conditions of prolonged exposure to small doses of radiation

Abstract: This research studied the interrelationship between the immune and oxidative-antioxidant systems in a group of individuals who had lived for a long time in areas contaminated with radionuclides after the Chernobyl catastrophe and as a result experienced prolonged exposure to small doses of ionizing radiation. We have examined a group of 100 students aged 18–24, where 50 of them formed the control group and the remaining 50 belonged to the experimental group as they arrived from the territories of enhanced radi… Show more

“…The thyroid status correlated with lipid parameters (Sokolenko & Sokolenko, 2017). Also, in this cohort radiation-induced intensification of oxidative processes was detected, which grew under conditions of additional stress of emotional nature and influenced the immune system (Sokolenko et al, 2018).…”

“…In addition, the inhibition of the ability of thyroid hormones to maintain an adequate antioxidant state is shown. Taking into account the earlier data published, one can say that the leading factors associated with the formation of oxidative stress among inhabitants of radiation-contaminated territories aged 18-24 without severe pathologies was the state of lipid metabolism and hyperproduction of cortisol (Sokolenko & Sokolenko, 2017;Sokolenko et al, 2018).…”

“…Biomaterial sampling techniques, reagents and research methods used have been described in detail in previous publications: evaluation of erythrocyte (AB0, Rhesus) and serum (haptoglobin Hp system) genetic blood systems (Sokolenko, 2016b), lipid metabolism (Sokolenko & Sokolenko, 2017b), the immune system and oxidative-antioxidant status (Sokolenko et al, 2018), cortisol and thyroid status (Sokolenko & Sokolenko, 2019). The diagnosis of vegetative-vascular dystonia (VVD) syndrome was set by the doctors of the sanatorium "Edem" at the university.…”
