Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a technology for desalination and water purification that charged ions are electrosorbed on the porous electrodes, thus its performance largely affected by choice of electrodes. In this paper, the MnO 2 /nanoporous carbon composites were prepared and used as electrodes in CDI. Salt removal efficiency for the MnO 2 /nanoporous carbon was 16.9 μmol/g which was higher than 5.4 μmol/g of the commercially available activated carbon (AC). The nanoporous carbons were synthesised using silica templates while their composites were prepared by a co-precipitation method and were characterised carefully. The capacitance of the MnO 2 /carbon composites (204.7 F/g) was higher than the AC (98.6 F/g). The capacitance increase may be attributed to the high surface area and suitable pore size distribution properties. Moreover, the MnO 2 film provided a high surface adsorption capability and an effective cation intercalation.

A series of luminescent hybrid materials Eu (Phen) 2 Cl 3 /MCM-41 that the different assembled mass of Eu(Phen) 2 Cl 3 included into the channels of MCM , have been synthesized by combining ultrasound technology. The properties of the hybrid materials were characterized by XRD(X-ray Diffraction), N 2 -adsorption-desorption, FT-IR and luminescence spectrum. The results show that the rare-earth compounds had been loaded into the holes of mesoporous material MCM-41. The luminescence intensities of the hybrid materials were improved as the increase of the loading concentration of the rare-earth complexes. The hybrid material has the maximal luminescence intensity when it reached the saturated loading concentration (7.17%). To compare with the pure rare-earth complex, the thermal stability of the hybrid materials were enhanced by about 100°C.

Benzyl alcohol oxidation by molecular oxygen using solid manganese oxide as a catalyst and n-heptane as the solvent was studied in the liquid phase. The catalyst was synthesized by a simple mechanochemical process at room temperature and was characterized by different physical methods. The catalyst was highly active and 100% selective for benzyl alcohol conversion to benzaldehyde. The solid catalyst can be recovered from the reaction mixture by simple filtration and can be re-used.
