“…Although prior instances of biotin interference have been described in infants and young children with suspected inborn metabolic disorders, (5,6,12) it is important to alert clinicians to a new patient context. We describe one case of abnormal thyroid function tests mimicking severe thyrotoxicosis and have observed similar results in two other women taking high dose biotin for progressive MS.…”

“…Biotin engages in a high affinity noncovalent interaction with the protein streptavidin and has been incorporated as an affinity tag for many in vitro assays (4). Interference of free biotin from patient samples with biotin-based thyroid laboratory assays has been described in infants and young children receiving high dose biotin therapy for suspected inborn metabolic disorders (5,6). Low doses of biotin in vitamin supplements are not thought to produce serum levels high enough to interfere with laboratory assays though some manufacturers such as Roche Diagnostics Inc. mention the potential for interference in anyone taking >5 mg biotin per day (7-9).…”

“…This usual dietary intake is not expected to be high enough to affect immunoassays based on the streptavidin-biotin binding [11]. However, patients with inherited metabolic diseases like propionic acidemia, biotinidase deficiency, (and patients with parenteral nutrition) receive higher dosage of biotin, with daily oral doses in case of inherited metabolic diseases ranging from 10 to 40 mg per day [12,13]. Supraphysiological biotin administration is also used in some auto-medication aimed at reducing hair loss or fortifying hair and nails (up to 20 mg per day).…”

“…Nel corso dello screening neonatale erano state rilevate un'interferenza negativa sulla determinazione del TSH e un'interferenza positiva su quella dell'fT4 eseguendo la determinazione con l'analizzatore ES 300, che non era stata confermata, eseguendo la determinazione con Amerlite [22].…”
