Interferometric near-infrared spectroscopy (iNIRS): performance tradeoffs and optimization

Abstract: Interferometric near-infrared spectroscopy (iNIRS) is a time-of-flight-(TOF-) resolved sensing modality for determining optical and dynamical properties of a turbid medium. iNIRS achieves this by measuring the interference spectrum of light traversing the medium with a rapidly tunable, or frequency-swept, light source. Thus, iNIRS system performance critically depends on the source and detection apparatus. Using a current-tuned 855 nm distributed feedback laser as the source, we experimentally characterize iNI… Show more

“…In contrast to coherence-gated methods that attempt to isolate singly scattered, superficial light 24 , iNIRS embraces multiply scattered, deeply penetrating light, while assessing it quantitatively. By tuning the light source optical frequency, iNIRS efficiently 25 and directly measures intrinsic field autocorrelations with 22-45 ps TOF resolution and shot noise limited sensitivity 26 . After carefully estimating and correcting extrinsic motion artifacts to isolate intrinsic tissue dynamics, in all studied tissues, we discern multiple exponentially decaying autocorrelation components, each with a distinct TOF distribution.…”

“… 3 , 23 , 35 Admittedly, any technique providing TOF-resolved CLFs 10 , 40 , 51 can also measure TPSFs and, in principle, with sufficient TOF resolution, quantify optical properties. However, unlike TD-DCS, iNIRS does not suffer from the tradeoff between coherence and TOF resolution 54 and can achieve TOF resolutions of picoseconds 41 with a high dynamic range through spectral shaping. 54 The major drawback of iNIRS is its intrinsically low-light throughput, resulting from the high cost of channels digitized at hundreds of MHz.…”

As argued elsewhere, TOF-discrimination is compatible with highly parallel detection by less expensive sensor arrays.…”

“…Lastly, the reference arm signal alone was recorded to estimate the background. Each dataset was processed to yield Γrs(τs,td) [14], which were autocorrelated and background-corrected to estimate static and dynamic TPSFs [5].…”

“…The diffuse portion of the dynamic TPSF is then fit via nonlinear regression by T(τs)*I0(τs) over the FW [shaded region in Figs. 3(d) and 3(e)], where * is the convolution in τs [14]. The reduced scattering and absorption coefficients for varying IL-20% concentrations are shown in Figs.…”
