“…Although prejudice is typically measured in terms of an attitude-that is, on a single dimension of valence, ranging from negative to positive-attitudes are often not fine-grained enough to predict specific behaviors; for example, when do negative attitudes predict neglect, as opposed to fear or attack (Fiske, 2018)? To understand the specific behaviors associated with prejudice, a more nuanced analysis of discrete intergroup emotions is needed (Neuberg & Schaller, 2016;Mackie & Smith, 2018).…”

“…A distinctive feature of intergroup emotions is that they may conflict with the emotional responses people feel in interpersonal contexts. In other words, in intergroup contexts, people's emotional responses may shift to reflect the priorities and interests of the group instead of the individual (Mackie & Smith, 2018). Nowhere is this pattern better characterized than in the domain of how we feel in response to ingroup versus outgroup members' suffering.…”

“…A related possibility is that different emotions underlie prejudice for different ideological groups and this could have consequences for how prejudice is translated into behavior. Emotions have different behavioral consequences (Mackie & Smith, 2018;Mackie, Maimer, & Smith, 2009;Zeelenberg, Nelissen, & Breugelmans, 2008). For example, if anger underlies prejudice for some groups, but fear underlies prejudice for other groups, the outcomes could differ.…”

“…Group-based emotional responses depend upon group membership (Mackie & Smith, 2018;Tajfel & Turner, 1986). Thus, manipulations to reduce group salience may mitigate the impact of group-based threat.…”

“…We extend research on meta‐emotion to examine the effect of group‐based meta‐emotion in shaping outgroup‐directed emotions and behavioural response intentions in intergroup threat contexts, focusing on meta‐emotions about the outgroup’s emotions, an external object . Research has previously established that intergroup threats provoke appraisals about and emotions towards the offending group (see Mackie & Smith, ). In addition to this well‐established effect, we suggest that meta‐emotions occur between groups such that ingroup members perceive and appraise the emotions of outgroup members, which then affect their own emotions towards the outgroup.…”
