Interim EQ-5D-5L Value Set for Poland: First Crosswalk Value Set in Central and Eastern Europe

Abstract: The crosswalk-based value set is available for use in EQ-5D-5L studies in Poland to calculate health state utilities. It should be considered an interim value set until values based on preferences elicited directly from a sample representative of the Polish general population become available. This study helps users of the crosswalk algorithm understand the properties of the EQ-5D-5L values generated using this method, in comparison to EQ-5D-3L values obtained with the Polish time trade-off value set. It is li… Show more

“…The smaller advantage of the 5 L exhibited in our study could also be partly due to the fact that previous studies used a crosswalk algorithm to calculate the 5 L index score. Index scores based on crosswalk are less precise or reliable than scores based on value sets which are estimated using preferences directly elicited from representative general population samples [30].…”

“…The use of an interim value set, based on a cross-walk methodology, to estimate the EQ-5D-5L index, was a major limitation of the study [28]. It would be desirable to use a directly measured value set; however, work on the EuroQol Group’s new official valuation protocol is still in progress [31, 32].…”

“…The EQ-5D health states may be converted into a single summary index by applying a formula that attaches values to each of the levels in each dimension. In order to calculate the EQ-5D-5L’s index values, we used an interim EQ-5D-5L value set for Poland [28], based on a crosswalk methodology that was developed by the EuroQol Group [29] and applied to the existing Polish EQ-5D-3L’s time trade-off value set [30]. …”

“…Overall 27 (31% of 86 studies) did not specify which tariff was used to calculate the EQ-5D index score. Poland and Slovenia are the only CEE countries with their own national tariff[120,183,184]. In Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania, studies were mainly based only the UK value set, in Austria and the Czech Republic on the UK or European, and in Poland and Slovenia on the UK or available national value set.Total number of EQ-5D index scores reported using the EQ-5D from CEE was 542 and the majority was originated from Hungary (n=248; 46%), Poland (n=104; 19%) and the Czech Republic (n=93; 17%).…”
