Interleukin-1 in the pathogenesis and treatment of inflammatory diseases

Abstract: More than any other cytokine family, the IL-1 family of ligands and receptors is primarily associated with acute and chronic inflammation. The cytosolic segment of each IL-1 receptor family member contains the Toll-IL-1-receptor domain. This domain is also present in each Tolllike receptor, the receptors that respond to microbial products and viruses. Since Toll-IL-1-receptor domains are functional for both receptor families, responses to the IL-1 family are fundamental to innate immunity. Of the 11 members of… Show more

“…Our method for detection of IL‐1β recognizes only the active form of the cytokine, indicating a cleavage of pro‐IL‐1β that is secreted in its active form. IL‐1β play a crucial role in the inflammatory process and by measuring the release of IL‐1β it can be used as a marker for assembly of the inflammasome complex in macrophages after exposure to Ti 31, 48. Addition of cobalt ions in the solution neutralized the Ti‐induced inflammatory effect in the exposed macrophages.…”

“…L'interleukine-1b L'IL-1 est une cytokine majeure de la réponse inflammatoire, connue auparavant sous la dénomi-nation de pyrogène endogène [30,31]. Elle exerce de nombreuses fonctions comme l'induction de la fièvre au niveau cérébral ou la stimulation de la moelle osseuse à l'origine d'hyperleucocytose et de thrombocytose.…”

“…The ligands and receptors belonging to the IL-1 family are primarily associated with both acute and chronic inflammation [1]. IL-1 type cytokines, including both IL-1α and IL-1β, mainly control the pro-inflammatory reactions in response to pathogen-induced tissue injury [1].…”
