Interleukin-2, Interferon-gamma Gene Polymorphisms in Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis

Abstract: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common oral ulcerative inflammatory disease with unknown etiology. IL-2 and IFN-γ are secreted by Th1 cells and the elevated levels of them have been reported in RAS. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of IL-2 and IFN-γ genes could alter the cytokine production. The aim of this study was to investigate frequencies of IL-2 and IFN-γ alleles and genotypes in a group of patients with minor-RAS (MiRAS). PCR-SSP method used to type genomic DNA of 64 Iranian patien… Show more

“…The study population included only 74 patients with RAS. However, the number of patients from this Czech population is comparable with the size of cohorts in other studies; see Table S1 . Another drawback of this study is that the levels of IL‐2, IL‐4, IL‐4R α , IL‐10, and IL‐13 were not measured; however, the functional relevance of the gene variants selected for the analysis is mostly known.…”

“…This is in line with the results of a study by SUN et al (38), also showing that MAFs are similar in Chinese healthy subjects and Czech controls. On the other hand, protective and risk IL2 genotypes were associated with RAS in an Iranian population (39). The differences between these studies may be a result of interpopulation genetic diversity; therefore, further studies in different ethnic groups and larger samples are needed.…”

“…Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common oral painful ulcerative inflammatory disease of unknown etiology; thereby its management has been remained a challenge yet (25). Compelling evidences demonstrate that some immune dysfunctions may underlie RAS pathogenesis (26). This report is of importance for dentists aimed at strengthening therapeutic modalities.…”

“…NSAIDs, which are responsible for approximately 5-10% of all medications prescribed each year (35), and β-blockers are the most common drugs responsible for oral LP (26). Antihypertensive medications are major culprits for GT [ Table 5].…”

“…FCOD is a non-malignant fibro-osseous lesion, having multifocal involvement in the tooth-bearing areas of the mandible. 6 Despite several evidences of familial and genetic predilection of some oral lesions, 7 , 8 FCOD has a poor familial and genetic background. 9 , 10 Clinically, this reactive lesion is asymptomatic, although the probability of dull pain, exposure of alveolar bone into the oral cavity, and alveolar sinus tract arising from secondary infection is quite possible.…”
