Interleukin-31 expression and relation to disease severity in human asthma

Abstract: Interleukin 31 (IL-31) is a novel T helper type 2 effector cytokine that plays an important role in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases. However, its role in human asthma remains unclear. The aim of this study was to measure IL-31 levels in the serum, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and bronchial tissue of asthmatics and healthy subjects, and identify its possible correlation to disease severity. We quantified IL-31 levels in the serum of patients with asthma (n = 44), as well as in controls (n = 22). Of… Show more

“…Patients with severe asthma showed higher expression of IL-31 and IL-31R in bronchial tissue compared with those with mild disease or with controls. High IL-31 serum levels in asthmatic patients positively correlated with those ofTh2 cytokines (IL-5, IL-13, and thymic stromal lymphopoietin) [33]. Those results demonstrate a role for IL-31 in asthma pathogenesis that must be clarified by future studies.…”

“…Expression of IL-31 was recently investigated in serum, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and bronchial tissue from patients with allergic asthma vs. controls [33]. The former individuals displayed higher IL-31 serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid levels than the latter did [33]. Patients with severe asthma showed higher expression of IL-31 and IL-31R in bronchial tissue compared with those with mild disease or with controls.…”

“…5B,C). IL31 is of major interest to our study as it is a Th2 cytokine overexpressed in asthma 35,36 . As such, IL31 was further analysed by real-time PCR in the complete set of www.nature.com/scientificreports www.nature.com/scientificreports/ PBMC samples, including healthy controls and asthmatic subjects to establish whether IL31 was indeed subject to regulation by WNT5A.…”

“…In other work, the IL-6 family member oncostatin M, levels of which are increased in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid of allergic asthmatic patients, reduced airway epithelial integrity by disrupting TJ assembly but did not influence the production of TJ components. 41 The related cytokine, IL-31, expression of which is also increased in the airways of asthmatic patients with severe disease, 42 has likewise been implicated in barrier dysfunction (Fig 2). Secretion of this novel cytokine by T H 2 cells requires autocrine IL-4.…”
