Interleukin-8 and SDF1-alpha mRNA expression in colonic biopsies from patients with inflammatory bowel disease

Abstract: IL-8 but not SDF1-alpha mRNA expression was associated with inflammation in UC. This suggests that IL-8 may play a more important role in inflammatory bowel disease than does SDF1-alpha.

“…They have also been implicated in various pathological conditions such as cancer [36], malignant pleural effusion [37] and infection with the HIV [38]. Furthermore, their involvement in various inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis [39], thyroiditis [40], inflammatory bowel disease [41] and nephritis [42] has been reported. In these inflammatory diseases, SDF-1a/ CXCR4 axis contributes to their pathogenesis via its strong chemoattractant against T lymphocytes.…”

In addition, IL-4 induces surface CXCR4 expression on human T cells, suggesting that this receptor might be associated with T helper (Th)2 cells (Jourdan et al, 1998;Annunziato et al, 1999).…”

“…However, overall, statistically significant differences in the extent or pattern of citrullination between normal and diseased tissue could not be observed (58). CXCL12 mRNA expression was investigated in homogenized colonic biopsies from patients with inflammatory bowel diseases and CXCL12 mRNA levels were higher in patients suffering from ulcerative colitis than from Crohn's disease (59). We studied protein expression and observed a regional expression pattern of CXCL12 protein in Crohn's disease showing marked up-regulation in areas of ulceration and erosion compared with normal colon.…”
