Intermittent Claudication and Asymptomatic Peripheral Arterial Disease

Abstract: eripheral arterial disease (PAD) is caused by atherosclerotic lesions in the pelvic and leg arteries. The incidence of atherogenic risk factors is rising worldwide (1), mainly due to the increasing age of the population. PAD is the third most common sequelae of arteriosclerosis after coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular diseases (1, 2). As a marker disease, it points to a high cardiovascular risk (3). It advances in stages (Table), initially causing a reduction in pain-free walking distance (intermittent… Show more

“…Fourth, a small proportion of patients in our cohort underwent lower extremity open revascularization for asymptomatic disease (< 2%). The reasons for these interventions are unclear from our dataset but may be related to revisions for hemodynamically significant stenoses of previous revascularization procedures, patient preference, poor adherence to guideline-directed revascularization, or coding errors 74 .…”

“…Bisher ist ein flächendeckendes Angebot von pAVK-Gehtrainingsgruppen in Deutschland nicht verfügbar, und die konsequente Kooperation zwischen Gefäßmedizinern und entsprechenden Reha-Sporteinrichtungen ist häufig nicht etabliert. Diese Tatsache wurde mehrfach bei den Fachtagungen und Kongressen angesprochen und wurde sowohl in der S3-Leitlinie [1] als auch im Deutschen Ärzteblatt [13]…”

“…One of the potential reasons behind that is the development of collateral vessel network that is often observed in aortoiliac/femoral arterial obstruction 62 ( Figure 5 right). The presence of collateral vessel alleviates the high pressure drop across a stenosed lesion, but to capture the small collateral arteries in CT images is a challenge.…”
