Intermittent fasting interventions for the treatment of overweight and obesity in adults aged 18 years and over: a systematic review protocol

Abstract: Overweight and obesity (classified as Body Mass Index [BMI] of greater than or equal to 25 and 30 respectively) is a global public health concern, with more than 1.9 billion adults worldwide being overweight in 2014 (over 600 million of whom are obese), and resulting in more deaths than underweight. A raised BMI in adulthood is associated with an increased risk of developing a number of chronic diseases which include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, muscular skeletal disorders and some cancers. In addition to… Show more

“…For many people, it is considered to be less restrictive compared to traditional methods of calorie restriction (calorie restriction) [9]. It involves taking a normal, daily caloric intake with the use of short, strict calorie restriction [10]. Meals are only consumed within a strictly defined time within a day or week [8].…”

“…The above-mentioned diets can be successfully used in people who want to reduce their weight to improve their health, but can also be implemented in a population of patients in whom obesity is an important risk factor for the development of type II diabetes [10]. In addition, the IF diet can be used as a supplement to training processes for people with a normal weight who want to improve their health regardless of their weight loss.…”

“…Health benefits of intermittent fasting have been demonstrated in both randomized controlled trials and observational studies [3,4]. Caloric restriction (CR) has also been shown to prevent several chronic degenerative and inflammatory diseases [5] and to prolong life in more primitive species including Escherichia coli and yeast [6].…”

“…The health benefits of intermittent fasting have been extensively demonstrated in animal models [7,8], and in several observational studies associated with decreased cancer risk and metabolic disease phenotype [9,10]. The mechanisms how fasting promotes health remain largely elusive, but regulation of metabolism is conceivably essential.…”
