Internal phloem in an interspecific hybrid of cassava, an indicator of breeding value for drought resistance

Abstract: ABSTRACT. We examined the stem anatomy of Manihot esculenta Crantz and its hybrid with M. oligantha Pax. Cross-sections were stained with safranin-alcian blue. Manihot esculenta and its hybrid were found to have the same vascular structure in bicollateral bundles with internal phloem, which has been associated with drought resistance in other plant groups. If this association is established for cassava, it would facilitate the selection of lines that are more adapted to arid regions. This is the first report o… Show more

“…Basal insertions also occur in Glaziovianae, but in the species studied, the insertions were peltate. The petioles and tissues containing the same location (arrangement) of those present in the stem of Manihot are described by Nassar et al (2008) and Graciano-Ribeiro et al (2009). According Esau (1974), the petiole of dicotyledons often has similar provision stem, and our observations corroborate this information.…”

“…The petioles of the species studied were similar in terms of tissue type and arrangement to Manihot stems (Nassar et al, 2008;Graciano-Ribeiro et al, 2009). According to Esau (1974), the petioles of dicotyledones are often similar to their stems; our observations corroborate this.…”

“…Anatomical studies of the vegetative organs of Manihot are scarce and have mainly been done on cultivated species (Graciano‐Ribeiro et al , , Nassar et al , Bomfim et al ). Among the few studies of this type on wild taxa are those by Vannucci () on M. caerulescens Pohl and M. pilosa Pohl, Mendonça () on M. glaziovii , and Cunha Neto et al () on the complex M. violacea Pohl.…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, only the studies by Vannucci (), Allem (), Mendonça (), Cunha Neto et al () and Silva et al () provide some information on the anatomy or micromorphology of Manihot leaves. The majority of the studies about this group deal with cassava breeding or the evaluation of anatomical characteristics of stems and roots of hybrids, cultivars and wild species for economical purposes (Graciano‐Ribeiro et al , , Nassar et al , Bonfim et al ), and only two studies analyze the anatomy of reproductive organs (Toledo , Oliveira and Oliveira ). Nevertheless, except for Cunha Neto et al (), all of these papers are descriptive works that do not address taxonomic issues, even though the information provided might be taxonomically valuable.…”
