Internal wall insulation with a new aerogel panel: SLENTITE®for energetic retrofit in historic buildings

Abstract: We present two recent test case application examples of a new high-performance insulation panel with product name SLENTITE® used as core element of a rendered internal wall insulation system. The first case study refers to the 18th-century building Alte Schäfflerei now the Fraunhofer Centre for Conservation and Energy Performance of Historic Buildings, at the monastery Benediktbeuern, southern Germany, where SLENTITE® was applied in 11/2017. The second test case was installed in 04/2019 in a heritage building … Show more

“…Due to their special thermal insulation properties, they are currently among the most efficient insulation materials with the lowest thermal conductivities. Mostly, they are based on SiO 2 , which is processed from aqueous precursor solutions containing silicate by adding a base to increase the pHvalue [29]. Thus, a highly open-pored, porous SiO 2 structure is obtained after supercritical drying.…”

“…Thus, the convective part of the heat conduction can be excluded. Pure aerogels usually have a thermal conductivity between 12-20 mW/(m•K) and the air-filled pores make up to 99.8% of the volume [29]. In addition, SiO 2 aerogels are nonflammable and have low strengths.…”

“…It can be applied where protected by a waterproofing layer or in vapor open construction variants. A detailed report on two field test cases where SLENTITE ® was applied as interior insulation in heritage buildings is given in our second paper [7].…”

“…In this study, this methodology was applied to characterize the thermal decomposition of the flame retardant polyurethane aerogel (FR_PU_aerogel, SLENTITE ® , Osnabrück, Germany), a newly-developed high-performance insulating material by BASF (Aerogelit) [25,26]. To the best of our knowledge, the thermal degradation for the FR_PU_aerogel has not been studied yet.…”
