Aims: To demonstrate how metaphor method can be employed in health care research, through a rainbow metaphor to conceptualise lived experiences, and represent a sense of verisimilitude, in a phenomenological study of international nurses' experiences of organ procurement procedures. Background: International operating room nurses are likely to form unique attitudes towards multi-organ procurement. Phenomenology is used to focus on discovering human experiences and the meanings of certain phenomena. Phenomenological writing can mediate people's reflections and actions, measure people's thoughtfulness and help people to see and show lived experiences from their lifeworlds. Design: Metaphor was used to interpret meanings of international operating room nurses' experiences in organ procurement surgery. The meanings were identified through a phenomenological approach informed by the work of van Manen. Methods: A metaphor method was used to interpret and understand the lived experiences of eighteen international OR nurses recruited from nine different countries. Thematic data analysis was used to portray their lived experiences in organ procurement procedure. Results: Using a rainbow as metaphor, a vivid picture was portrayed reflecting international OR nurses' experiences and organ procurement journey in Australia as challenging, with mixed feelings. According to the relationship between certain colours and emotions, four essential themes evolved into the concept of a four-colour rainbow to signify the meanings of international OR nurses' experiences in organ procurement procedures. The essential themes represented by these four colours were as follows: Orange-"The surreality of experiencing death," Red-"Personal and professional challenges," Green-"Becoming stronger" and Purple-"My beliefs, my wishes." Conclusion: Interpreting the meanings of their organ procurement experiences using metaphor method provided valuable insights about what personal and professional challenges these nurses faced, how they coped and managed their challenges, what support and care they required from others, and suggestions for future practice. | 4605 GAO et Al.

Objective: In the aftermath of earthquakes, the availability of emergency units and operating rooms (OR) in hospitals can make a difference in the survival of those injured. OR professionals’ experience during earthquakes is vital for ensuring safe and effective surgical procedures. This study was conducted to explore perceptions and describe the experiences of OR professionals, aiming to improve OR processes during and after earthquakes. Methods: This phenomenological study employed semi-structured interviews to collect qualitative data from 16 OR professionals who experienced the earthquake. Purposeful sampling was utilized for face-to-face interviews, and MAXQDA20 was used for content analysis. Results: The primary themes included workplace perspectives, during-earthquake experiences, ethical considerations, and post-earthquake experiences. The workplace was described as unique, dynamic, stressful, and disciplined. Participants experienced fear and panic during the earthquake. Abandoning patients was deemed unethical, resulting in ethical quandaries for professionals when their safety was at risk. Conclusion: Participants displayed responsibility and ethical conduct while remaining with the patients during the tremor. Implementing practices is crucial in mitigating fear and chaos and improving information management. As such, it is highly recommended that hospital disaster plans incorporate the active participation of OR professionals.

Effect of a Feedforward Control Model on Nursing Attitudes in the Operating Room

To evaluate the effect of a feedforward control model on nursing error behaviour and nursing attitudes in the operating room. Methods: A total of 216 patients admitted to our hospital from January 2018 to December 2020 were randomly selected as the research subjects and divided into a control group and a research group, with 108 cases in each. The control group received routine surgical nursing management, while the research group received surgical nursing management with a feedforward control model. Nursing quality, error behaviour, and work attitude score, as well as the occurrence of safety hazards and patient satisfaction, were compared between the two groups of patients. Results: Compared with the control group, the nursing quality score, including nursing document quality (72.0 ± 1.8 vs 97.2 ± 2.0), quality control inspection (75.4 ± 1.9 vs 95.5 ± 1.2), disinfection and isolation (73.4 ± 2.4 vs 96.6 ± 2.0) and nursing safety management (71.1 ± 2.2 vs 98.0 ± 1.8), were higher in the research group (P < 0.05); the scores for nursing error behaviour (13.2 ± 1.0 vs 19.4 ± 1.8) and work attitudes of the research group (14.0 ± 1.2 vs 19.0 ± 2.0) were higher (P < 0.05); and the research group had a lower incidence of safety hazards (11.1% vs 0.9%, P < 0.05); finally, the research group had higher patient satisfaction (71.3% vs 93.5%, P < 0.05). Conclusion:The application of a feedforward control model for nursing management in the operating room can significantly reduce nurses' errors and improve their attitudes, continuously reduce the incidence of safety incidents, improve the quality of operating room nursing and increase the satisfaction of patients and their families with the nursing care they received.
